About "In Rainbowland"

This year's theme was inspired by the song "Rainbowland" by Miley Cyrus and featuring Dolly Parton.

This past spring, a 1st grade class in Waukesha, WI was prohibited from performing the song because members of the administration feared that it would be considered controversial by some members of their community. Their teacher, Melissa Tempel, voiced her disappointment about this decision on public media, citing the district's other actions to minimize the needs of marginalized students, including barring the posting of Safe Zone and Black Lives Matter signs. Her post went viral, shining a spotlight on Waukesha. This summer, the district fired Melissa, in part citing that her actions made the district "less safe" for students and staff.
